What Is Cranial Therapy?

Many people think of the skull as one solid bone with a brain inside. In fact, it is a complex system of individual bones fitting together like a 3D jigsaw puzzle.

Cranial therapy releases restricted skull joints and their supporting tissues through a painless procedure involving gentle application of focussed pressure. It is a gentle, safe and extremely effective approach and may be used in a wide range of conditions for people of all ages, from birth to old age.

Cranial chiropractors have undertaken extra training over several years after first graduating in chiropractic. They have become skilled in the assessment and treatment of cranial and jaw related conditions. Cranial treatment is usually integrated with the chiropractic approach, so that the spine, pelvis and cranium and their relationship to the nervous system are all given equal priority.

Many practitioners of chiropractic cranial therapy will agree that intrauterine constraint due to the mother’s pelvis being out of balance could lead to a strain being applied to a baby’s head during pregnancy and many also recognise that the birth process is probably where the skull and spine are put under extra pressures. Other causes of cranial stress may include problems with jaw joint function or the bite, some types of dental procedures or direct trauma to the head.
